Please help! need funding for my adhd child!

by Shannon
(Ontario Canada)

My son is 11 yrs old and was diagnosed with adhd when he was 5. I'm now finding out that I possibly could have been getting extra money for his needs? My sons has had 2 evaluations at his school to determine if he has a learning disability. Both times the evaluation came back saying basically it's just his adhd. They have made an iep based on this so it is called behavioural...He is now in grade 7 an his reading level is only at grade 2-3. He is modified only in certain subjects and gets A's B's and C's in the ones he's not modified in. I've had his iep and assessment looked at by another professional outside of the school and she stated she could almost guaranty he has a learning disability. Problem is they will not re-assess him until he is older. I can get an assessment done privately but it would cost me $1600.00 and I cannot afford it. I'm a single mother work almost full time but only make a little over min wage. Any suggestions would help and be greatly appreciated! My son is a bright boy and they are letting him slip through the cracks! Also I live in Ontario Canada thanks again!

ADHD & learning disorder testing site - $300 NEW
by: Anonymous

I will write this a third time but a little shorter. Something when I click near the top gets touched accidentally and everything disappears. So, I’m thinking third time is a charm.
Niagara, testing is 2-4 yr wait list.
Was told private testing was between 3-5,000$. Even 1200 or 1500$ would have been a lot for me.
Was told by someone, U Of B @ Buffalo, Psych Dept. I called & testing was $300. They even allowed me to pay $150 one week and then 150$ a week later on the second day of testing.
Had a wonderful experience and so did my daughter!
The entire timeline was 5 weeks from start to finish and that includes the 2 weeks I waited for the initial appointment!
I made two visits w my daughter a week apart, I then had a verbal report and discussion a week later and the hard copy in my mail box a week later.
I wish you well. Darlene

government run around
by: Anonymous

My 12 year old daughter has been diagnosed with adhd. The psychologist for the school board has diagnosed her and rates her at 8 out of 10 for severity. 2 pediatricians have diagnosed her with adhd. We learned that they ontario government has financial assisstance for her and it would surely help to cover time lost at work and psychologists bills. The problem is that her pediatrician is great, but does not feel that she qualifies because he thinks she is not handicapped enough. We have only seen him twice, and the previous Dr. was just pushing meds on her. We hear that we need an adhd specialist to assess her and fill out the forms and they are not cheap. Does anyone know where to find a qualified adhd specialist in the Kitchener Ontario area, and what we should be wary of.
Thank you for your help with our daughter.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD and was on Ritalin for awhile, he complained of headaches and stopped taking. But now he's finished High school and wants to learn to drive and go to college. Is there funding for this?

What I did
by: Anonymous

call the Canadian child tax benefit number and ask them where to call to get a form mailed to you, It is the disitibility tax credit form. they will mail you the form that needs to be filled out, and all you have to do it bring it to any of the listed qualified persons listed (I went to my family doctor) it would be good to attach a letter from you and also a letter from the person(s) who diagnosed him. and if he is qualified you will get a back pay. good luck

ADHD Support
by: Alley Dezenhouse

Hi there,

What kind of programs is your son enrolled in that you are looking for support to pay for? There are tax exemptions you should be aware of, specifically GI-112 (I think). Feel free to email me with further questions.
