People who work on ODSP
by: Anonymous

You can work if you are on the this benefit. Their are people I know that are on this benefit that can work but are not able to work a lot of hrs to support themselves but they enjoy working.

There are also those that are advised by a DR. not to work or their condition will continue to get worse and they work anyway because that's what keeps them going.

These people I applaud at least even when the cards are against them they are still trying.

What bothers me is the ones who are on the welfare system that choose not to try to better themselves by finishing their grade 12 or simply don't want to get a job at all.

Instead choosing to have a or more children to increase the amount of income they get.

What do YOU think??

I wrote the first comment hoping to hear a reason to just leave this alone, and like its known that you are allowed to earn a certain amount before odsp wants to make deductions, well first if this guy is well enough to work, then he has already fibbed second, the amount he earns isn't just an insignificant's the same as any other laborer makes, then the reason that set this in motion, his smug creepy way he brags that it's easy

Note from Anna...

Here's a thought... imagine yourself in a situation where you are disabled.... Would you not WANT to work? Even if you can only do a little bit, and not a "full" job, then you would probably still want to be out in public, and feeling useful. And there is a lot to be said about earning your own money, even if it isn't enough to leave on.

In the best case scenario, ODSP or Ontario Works helps make up the difference between partial earnings and enough to live on - at least in theory. It is NOT generous, and most people still have problems paying bills, even though they live very simply.

Imagine yourself in the situation before placing blame, please...

it's just rude

If a fellow gets up and goes to work five and six days of the week and collects an odsp check ,well I think it is grounds for an investigation, I realize my knowledge isn't the answer to the all mighty but it pains me to see someone thumb their nose at the system in such a way, I don't think myself to be a snoop and would assume most people would react in the same fashion

Note from Anna...

You may not be aware that it is quite possible to be working and also on ODSP. The amount of ODSP is adjusted - clawed back - based on the amount of earnings.

The idea is that ODSP can act as a "filler" between what minimum amount a person may earn without a disability and the amount they actually receive.

Also, there may be a time lag between the two phases of non-work due to disability and working to earn enough to be self-sustaining. ODSP may fill in the gap...
